week. >> getting it done means a win over the cowboys at fedex field next sunday. kick off has been moved to 8:20 p.m. a win would clinch the nfc east for the first time since 1989. a loss and they can get in as a wild card. i want to see that game. it will be late. a check of the other top stories, prince george county police arrested john jenkins for a bomb scare in college park. they believe he put an explosive device in a van parked on edgewood road. police found them friday morning and the bomb squad deactivated the device. he is facing two felony charges which could come with jail time and a fine. the nation's largest gun lobby organization continues to call for armed police or guards in schools. the nra says it does not support any new gun control legislation and any knew

efforts by congress to regulate guns or ammunition would not prevent mass shootings like the one in connecticut. the nra response is being panned on several fronts, even from republicans. >> i say not to mention guns in trying to eliminate sool violence is like not mentioning cigarettes in trying to eliminate lung cancer. it makes no sense. i am hopeful we can get this done in a bipartisan way with democrats and republicans joining together. >> i am not someone that believes having multiple armed guards in every school is something that will enhance the learning environment. that is the first responsibility inside of school is the learning environment. you don't want to make this an armed camp for kids. >> on friday president obama assembled a task force to reduce gun violence and wants concrete proposals in a month. residents in mount airy, maryland, will take time out to

honor the victims of the school shooting in connecticut. a candle lit vigil will be held at the mount airy fire company at route 27 and twin arch road. 26 balloons will be released for each of the victims of the school shootings. the balloon idea came from a 3- year-old girl. some extra love for a little girl shot on a metro bus earlier this month. two-year old cody's mother, selena brown died in that shooting. cody needs reconstructive surgery. a few folks got together to organize a fund-raiser and toy drive to make christmas happier. >> we wanted to reach out to the family to give them some type of community support to let them know that the community is behind them. we send them our deepest condolences. >> i have to go out and get

whatever i can. brings her spirits up and this is something that she will remember and comfort her knowing that people love her. >> cody's grandmother will now raise her. the organizers wanted to show the family that they didn't have to handle everything on their own. congress has one week to come to an agreement in order to avoid the so called fiscal cliff. some lawmakers are not hopeful a deal will be reached. congress will return to work on thursday after taking a few days off for the christmas holiday. if no deal is reached the nation will see across the board tax increases and spending cuts in domestic programs. >> while congress focuses on avoiding the fiscal cliff, a number of other legislative issues are going unattended including the agriculture bill which could lead to a big increase in the price of milk. under the bill the government buys milk from farmers if it

the duke and dutchess of cambridge will northbound the southern english village of bucklebury. they will pay a visit to the queen tomorrow, who is at an estate in eastern england. scary moments for a minnesota family. a man crashed his helicopter trying to land near his son's home. the son watched in horror as it went down. the chopper spun out of control, hit a trailer in the yard, and within seconds went up in flames. amazingly the pilot walked away with a burn on his arm. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. a very happy reunion in arizona after a family is

reunited with their husky and just in time for christmas. the dog named cain has been missing since april after he escaped from the backyard. he wondered hundreds of miles from home to oregon where he was found and brought to an animal shelter. he had microchip that helped track down his owners. >> huskies like to run and run. i had one of those dogs. >> the chip worked. >> yeah. still ahead, a call for change. details about a special christmas eve event taking place on the national mall today. >> all right. we have a changing forecast. clouds are moving in. eventually a chance for a little bit of sleet, maybe freezing rain out west and then all rain around here for this afternoon. ternoon.

looking. >> i think it's weird. >> no one else has been able to recreate. stormy pattern this week today, wednesday and saturday we have a chance for a little something. the reason i say something we aren't quite sure what each day has to offer. first we will start with the cold. 32 in washington. 32 leonardtown. north and west 20s in manassas. 27 in frederick. 27 in winchester. plenty of cold air across the area. that will be a factor in the forecast particularly north and west as things will be slow to warm up. clouds to start your day. maybe a break early but i think for the most part nice and cloudy. you can see the beginnings of our next storminess off to the south and west. it's coming up in the form of rain. what will be happening, let me mention this system is not terribly organized. it doesn't have a lot of

moisture. it's pushing to the washington area. an area of low pressure will move to the west. we will be in the warm sector. things will gradually warm up in the upper 30s to 40. that will warm up to rain showers this afternoon. off to the west and north you will be slower to warm up. you can see a mix. by mix i mean probably a few snowflakes, maybe sleet mixing in as the whole thing moves through. a fast mover, it will start at 1:00, 2:00 and out of here by 8:00 or 9:00. the farther east of the city the better chance you will get rain showers. there are the winds northeast 5 to 10. tonight early showers, cold overnight. the accuweather seven-day forecast, 47 tomorrow. wednesday another chance of storminess then again on saturday. okay. that's weather. let's do traffic with jeff new man. >> good morning, tucker. maryland 270 heading south we are seeing a bit of volume but

nothing to worry about. on the beltway south of the legion bridge both directions at speed, incident free. no construction today. prince george's county same situation. a reminder for folks d.c. and montgomery county not enforcing parking rules or rush hour restrictions. virginia, arlington county will enforce parking meters. alexandria will not. that's a look at your fox 5 on- time traffic. >> thank you very much, jeff. the nation is trying to make sense of the senseless act of vines in connecticut. >> the tiny new england town can hopefully put on a smile as towns from across america step in to help. marion rafferty has the story. >> reporter: the nation stood shocked after hearing about the tragic elementary school shooting in newtown, connecticut. the response almost immediate from communities sometimes hundreds of miles away, asking the same question, what can i do to help? >> i want them to smile.

i want them to smile again and know that people do care and love them. >> reporter: folks in smyrna, georgia, organizing a teddy bear drive collecting ted by bears for each of the children at sandy hook school. >> teddy bears mean a lot to children. it's good to have something that you can remember. >> reporter: he is asking people to light a candle in front of their homes on christmas eve. >> we want them to put the candles out so they can remember the people who died at the school. >> reporter: the family's tree is decorated head to toe with angels representing each child lost in the shooting. a large act of kindness from nebraska and arizona. communities in both states are setting up toy drives. folks from nebraska traveled 1300 miles to drop toys off personally. >> it's important that newtown knows that they are not

suffering in isolation. the whole country hurts. we all ache over this. >> in maryland, dozens of children are cutting out paper snowflakes sending them to the sandy hook students for decorations for the new school. >> it's sad. we will try to prevent this in the future. we miss you. we miss all of them. >> in addition to the grass roots donation efforts, the united way set up a fund to help the victims and the newtown community heal. mary ann rafferty, fox news. director quintin car ran tino talks about his movie. >> we are stationed in italy. we would like to wish our family and friends merry christmas and happy new year.

this morning a live look outside, people will be stirring. not a lot of people at work and school but the malls will be crazy today.

malls and other stores as well as people trying to get the last minute holiday shopping in. here is the other thing people are buzzing about. everyone is talking about the redskins. they beat the eagles. they are one game away from securing a play-off spot. it comes down to sunday's game against dallas. we will have more on the skins coming up. we will take everything redskins. >> it's great. they have been doing well. >> next sunday is a play-off game. winner goes on. >> yeah. >> who are they playing. >> the mighty cowboys. >> sarah. >> sorry. >> she has been on vacation. >> yeah. she was with me all last week. >> that was my vacation. let's get to it. cold start to the day. upper 20s, 32 in town. it will be a chilly day today. even though we warm up to 40 later this afternoon it won't be nearly as bright as yesterday. lots of clouds in the forecast. eventually we will get a little

precip in here. generally shower activity expected. north and west of the city a better chance you will see a mix particularly at the onset here if the atmosphere kind of holds on to the cold long enough. there is the satellite and radar. clouds on the increase here in the last couple of hours. mostly cloudy today. a few light showers in southwest virginia. that is the storminess for today. it's not well organized. total rain amounts, a tenth which is light but it doesn't take a lot to cause issues. as you get well north and west, western maryland into parts of pennsylvania, they will have more of an icing issue. around here, as i mentioned, we are expecting to get close to 40. any mix you see will transition to rain pretty quick by late afternoon. and the whole event will be about six or eight hours. that's about it. 1:00 and out by 8:00, 9:00 tonight. >> it will be an issue when

time traffic. >> thank you very much. for your holiday shopping procrastinators, today is the last day to get the gifts on your list. >> macy's is open 24 hours. many other stores are opening early. sherry, any last minute shoppers you spotted? >> reporter: the good news is it's pretty barren out here now. if you have shopping to do, you can get in there and browse, find whatever you want and get in and out quickly. macy's, as you mentioned is open 24 hours. the doors from inside the mall are closed but they will open at 6:00 when tysons fully opens at the mall. we have seen a few shoppers browsing around. a guy had a couple of bags doing his last minute shopping. stores are trying to make up for what has been a weak holiday shopping season. if you waited until the last minute, there are plenty of deep discounts out there. people packed the mall over the

weekend but analysts say they seem to be spending less. shopper track dropped the holiday sales forecast on friday expecting sales this year to grow only a meager 2.5% compared to the earlier projections of 3.3%. now torques try to drum up sales, many stores are saying open 24 hours through the weekend and staying open late tonight on christmas eve and plenty of people may still have things on their christmas list to get. going into the weekend, retail me not said half of all consumers had shopping left to do. stores are slashing prices with some offering 70% discounts. deals with freebies with purchases. if that is not enough, you can get a gift card so the special person in your life can do a little bit of the shopping themselves after the holidays. now, the downside, if you procrastinated, a lot of those hot must have items are gone by now. but, you do have the deep discounts out there. by the way, not to be sexist

officials in chile issued the highest alert sunday for a volcano on the border with argentina. it started spilling ash and gas saturday. so far there are no mandatory evacuations. many farmers are moving their livestock. here locally a special christmas eve event will be held at the national mall in honor of the school shooting victims and intended to show support for children around the world. circle up for kids kicks off at noon and people will join hands around the washington monument

santa has a new way of getting around. over the weekend, he hitched a ride on a helicopter. he flew over north county high school to drop candy canes to the kids waiting below. the event was organized all scott ministries -- alscott ministries. >> how cute. >> he is surveying the route he will take. >> i'm working on that. >> the route. >> one of the kids wanted to know what route he was taking. >> see how it fill into place just then. >> yeah. >> he has a busy couple of days. >> yeah. >> getting ready to go. around here, if you are going to be out and about getting last minute presents, it looks like conditions here, it won't be a beautiful day but we are not looking at a worst- case scenario. it will generally be light showers around here this afternoon. let's get going with

temperatures. 32 at reagan national. cold enough for something wintry. 32 leonardtown. as we get to the west, lots of 20s. fredricksburg 29 to the south and west. 27 the winning number in gaithersburg. no doubt bit, on the cool side to start your day. dulles 26 at this hour. we have seen temperatures bottom out. they should warm up to the upper 30s and low 40s. temperatures will be critical here as we have some precipitation on the move toward the washington area. that will get in later this afternoon. your morning hours will be fine. as we get into one, 2:00 this afternoon we will see it move in. timing is favorable to keep it generally liquid across the washington area. clouds will start your day. lots of clouds in the forecast. a cool one, no doubt about it with highs in the 30s and 40s. here is the storminess. area of low pressure will be to the west. we will be on the warm side of things. we are thinking generally this will be liquid for us.

secondly not a whole lot with it. as it passes through, precipitation totals should be light. but, however, as it does arrive, there will be enough cold air particularly north and west of the city that the onset -- honestly for the entire area, at the onset, we could get a few snowflakes or making with sleet as the system moves through. if you hear the tink, tink on the windshield, that is the sleet developing. north and west of the city we may get a mix. not expecting anything to accumulate, no travel problems. it moves through by 6:00. things are winding down and it will be out of here by 7:00, 8:00. not a major deal but a little winter weather particularly north and west into the afternoon hours. cloudy skies, a little sleet. snowflakes changing to showers. highs in the 40s. 35 tonight. early showers.

arundel county no, volume at all. a reminder that in the district, the city was not enforcing the meters or residential parking rules or rush hour restrictions. montgomery county the same thing. virginia and alexandria not enforcing parking but arlington is enforcing the meters throughout the day today. that is a look at your fox 5 on- time traffic. >> all right. thank you very much, jeff. metro says they will operate on a normal weekday schedule on this christmas eve. for christmas, trains and buses will be on a sunday schedule. that means they will be running at 7:00 a.m. with the rail system closing at midnight. the loudoun county sheriff's office got an early christmas present after a canine is found safe and sound. bronco was found after going missing friday afternoon. the four-legged pup escaped from the groomers apparently. the sheriff's office says he is in good condition but was taken to the vet as a precaution.
